Five players on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have earned 2022 All-South Central Region honors from the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA). Freshman second baseman Austin Beck of Allen, senior pitcher Ben Elder of Chico, Calif., senior outfielder Justin Lee of Las Vegas, Nev., and senior first baseman Aaron Walters of Center Point were named to the All-South Central Region first team. Senior pitcher Jake Rogers of Las Vegas, Nev., was named to the all-region second team. All five were also named to the All-Lone Star Conference first team, and Beck was named LSC Freshman of the Year. Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden, a graduate student on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named to the 2021-22 NCAA Division II Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance in athletic competition and in the classroom. Ovcina is the only tennis athlete on the District 6 first team. She is studying for her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree and is carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA. On the court, Ovcina was named to the All-Lone Star Conference first team for doubles, and she and her partner, Valentina Gonzalez, are the reigning ITA South Central Region doubles champions. She was also named LSC Academic Player of the Year. By being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team, Ovcina is eligible for the Academic All-America Team that will be announced in June. Seven players on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team were named to the All-Lone Star Conference Tournament Team after the Rams claimed the LSC Tournament title on May 14. Freshman second baseman Austin Beck of Allen was named MVP of the tournament. He is joined on the all-tournament team by pitchers Ben Elder of Chico, Calif., and Aaron Munson of San Antonio; outfielders Koby Kelton of Austin and Justin Lee of Las Vegas, Nev.; shortstop Justin Harris of The Woodlands; and catcher Richard "Tripp" Clark of Waco. The Rams swept through the LSC Tournament, winning three straight games, including two in a row over arch-rival West Texas A&M. Three members of the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team have been named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team for the 2022 outdoor season. Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia, Sara Ramos of Uvalde and Mia van Oudtshoorn of Kroonstad, South Africa, were all named to the LSC Women's All-Academic Team. Radic and Ramos are graduate students majoring in coaching, sport. recreation and fitness administration. Van Oudtshoorn just graduated from ASU on May 14 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and earned the ASU Distinguished Student Award for the College of Science and Engineering. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The honorees are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement. Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia, and Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, both members of the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, have been named Lone Star Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Year for the 2022 outdoor season. Radic, a graduate student, won the high jump and long jump at the LSC Outdoor Championships to be named the LSC Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Year. Spence won the heptathlon and the 100-meter hurdles to be named the LSC Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the Year. Between the two of them, they scored 68.5 points at the championship meet to help lead the Rambelles to a second-place finish with 194 points. Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village and Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield, infielders on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, have been named to the 2022 Academic All-District 6 Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. A junior second baseman, Lerma is majoring in finance and carrying a 3.94 GPA. She has also been named to the All-Lone Star Conference first team, LSC All-Academic Team, and the NFCA and D2CCA All-South Central Region second teams. She also earned a LSC Golden Glove Award for her play on defense. Scheurer, a junior third baseman, is majoring in industrial/organizational psychology and carrying a 3.77 GPA. She has also been named LSC Player of the Year and Academic Player of the Year, and D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year. She was also named to the NFCA All-South Central Region first team and has made the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year Top 25 list. Jackson Hardy of Silsbee, a senior outfielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named to the 2022 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team for his performances on the field and in the classroom. The All-Academic Team is selected by the LSC's sports information directors, who select players based on both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible, student-athletes must have played in at least 50% of the team's contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average for their entire collegiate career. Hardy is majoring in business administration at ASU, and he makes the LSC All-Academic Team for the second straight year. He was also named to the LSC All-Defensive Team after posting a .991 fielding percentage in center field and committing just one error all season. Austin Beck of Allen, a freshman infielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the 2022 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year for his performance during the regular season. In his first season, Beck solidifed himself as the Rams' starting second baseman and lead-off hitter. He finished third in the LSC in batting average (.401), second in runs scored (69), third in walks (34), tied for fifth in hits (75) and on-base percentage (.502) and first in stolen bases (27). He also notched four home runs and 49 RBIs, and he was also named to the All-LSC first team at second base. Three players from the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team have earned multiple 2022 All-South Central Region honors from the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Junior third baseman Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield was named the D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year and is an all-region first-team selection by both the D2CCA and NFCA. She is batting .378 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs, and she has made the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player of the Year Top 25 list. Sophomore pitcher Genesis Armendariz of Hobbs, N.M., was named to the All-South Central Region first team by the NFCA and the all-region second team by the D2CCA. She has posted a 19-5 record with a 2.40 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 134 innings. Junior second baseman Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village was named to the All-South Central Region second team by both the D2CCA and NFCA. She has posted a .353 batting average and .492 on-base percentage with 35 walks and 46 stolen bases, and she was named to the LSC Golden Glove Team for her outstanding defense. Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield, the third baseman for the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and LSC Academic Player of the Year for the 2022 season. A graduate student, Scheurer is only the third player in LSC softball history to win both awards in the same season. She started every game this season and posted a .379 batting average, 22 home runs and 70 RBI. She is third in NCAA Division II in home runs and RBI. In the classroom, she is working toward her master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology and is carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also named to the All-LSC first team and the LSC All-Academic Team. Garcia posted a .971 fielding percentage behind the plate, threw out 15 baserunners and allowed only 21 stolen bases all season, the lowest total in the LSC. Four members of the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team have collectively earned the Lone Star Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor for Week 7 of the outdoor season ending May 1. ASU's 4x400-meter relay team made up of Zykia McDaniel of Converse, Genevie Rivera of San Antonio, Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, and Shiean Walters of Coleman took first place at the Oliver Jackson Twilight meet in Abilene. Their time of 3:41.73 improved their provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships and is the fifth-fastest time in all of D-II this season. Eighteen Angelo State University student-athletes received a variety of individual postseason awards at the annual Holland's Sports Banquet hosted by the ASU Athletic Department and sponsored by Holland's Jewelry. Fourteen student-athletes received the Holland's Award for their respective sports as voted on by their teammates. At the banquet, 14 students were given the Holland's award in their respective sports as voted on by their teammates. The winner exemplifies what it means to be an ASU student-athlete in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. Ayda Guler of Sydney, Australia, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 12 of the spring season ending April 24. As the Belles went 2-0 over the final weekend of the regular season, Guler went 4-0 across singles and doubles play. She helped lead the Belles to a road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and and a home win over Western New Mexico to clinch a share of the LSC regular-season title. This is Guler's first LSC weekly award of her ASU career. The Belles open play in the LSC Tournament on Thursday against UT Tyler in Arlington. Maria Sierra Sanz of Gijon, Asturias, Spain, a member of the Angelo State University Rambelles golf team, has earned All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention for her performance during the 2021-22 season. Sierra Sanz finished in the top 10 in six of the season's eight tournaments, including runner-up performances at the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate. She posted an average score of 79.43 over 21 rounds. She is the first ASU golfer to earn an All-LSC postseason honor since the 2015-16 season. Ramitha Irrinki of Round Rock, a freshman on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 10 of the spring season ending on April 10. As the Belles swept three road matches over the weekend, Irrinki went 5-0 to help the Belles extend their winning streak to five matches overall. Against Arkansas Tech, she won, 7-5, in doubles before winning at line five in three sets in the Belles' 4-3 win. She and partner Ayda Guler won at line two, 6-0, as the Belles swept UAFS 7-0 overall. She closed out the week with a big performance against No. 6 Cameron, as she and Guler won, 7-6 (7-5), to clinch the doubles point. She then picked up 6-1, 6-2 win at line six as ASU upset the Aggies 5-2. This spring, Irrinki is 12-3 in singles play and 13-5 in doubles play. Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet March 31 - April 2, Kryukov won the heptathlon with 7,529 points. He posted first-place finishes in the long jump, discus and javelin, and he finished second in three other events. He currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the decathlon. Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, a freshman on the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet, Spence won the heptathlon with 5,371 points, beating her previous personal best by over 500 points. Dianela Rodriguez of Mexico City, Mexico, a junior on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 9 of the season ending April 3. Rodriguez set the tone for the Belles at line one in singles play as they claimed a pair of conference wins last weekend. Against Dallas Baptist University, she defeated the Lady Patriots' Caroline Hudson 6-4, 6-2 as the Belles claimed a 7-0 win. The next day against No. 33 Midwestern State, she defeated 36th-ranked Anda Ghinga 6-2, 6-2, with the Belles winning 4-3 over the Mustangs. Aaron Munson of San Antonio, a sophomore pitcher on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week for Week 9 of the season ending on April 3. This is his second LSC weekly award this season. During the Rams' 4-game series sweep of St. Edward's University in Austin, Munson threw a complete-game shutout in Game 2 to lead ASU to a narrow 2-0 victory. He surrendered only three hits over seven innings and recorded six strikeouts while holding the Hilltoppers to a .130 team batting average. Munson is now 5-1 this season with a 3.72 ERA. Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village, a junior infielder on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for Week 8 of the season ending March 27. As the Rambelles split doubleheaders with both No. 1 UT Tyler and No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce, Lerma led the way in both ASU wins. Against the Patriots, she singled, drew two walks, stole a base and scored the winning run in a 3-2 victory. She also drove in a run in 7-2 loss in Game 2 against UTT. In ASU's victory over the Lions, Lerma went 4-for-4 at the plate, including her second inside-the-park home run of the season, and scored four runs as the Rambelles won 13-2. She also drove in ASU's only run in their subsequent 3-2 loss. She hit .500 for the week with a .600 on-base percentage.
