ASU's Martin Wins Prestigious National Music Scholar Award

Benjamin Martin of Fort Worth, a senior music major at Angelo State University, has earned a 2024-25 Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award from the Presser Foundation in Philadelphia that includes a $3,000 scholarship and the title of Presser Scholar. The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award annually celebrates students, selected by their music faculty during their final year of study, "who have achieved a high level of music and academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and contributed to an inclusive community." It is the most prestigious undergraduate honor in music at Angelo State. A graduate of Aledo High School, Martin will graduate from ASU in May with his Bachelor of Music degree with all-level teacher certification. His primary instrument is trumpet, and he was the winner of ASU's 2022 Concerto Competition. He has performed as a member of the ASU Ram Horns, ASU Trumpet Ensemble, ASU Symphony Orchestra, ASU Brass Ensemble, ASU V/V (Five for Five) Brass Quintet and ASU Symphonic Band. He has also conducted performances by the Symphonic Band and accompanied the ASU Chorale in concert. Additionally, Martin has made the ASU Dean's List every semester. Besides the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, he has received the ASU Friends of Art and Music Education (FAME) Scholarship, ASU Music Scholarship and Sean W. Vick Memorial Scholarship. ASU's Kjar Wins Prestigious National Music Scholarship

Selah Rose Kjar of San Angelo, a senior music major at Angelo State University, has earned a 2023-24 Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award from the Presser Foundation in Philadelphia that includes a $3,000 scholarship and the title of Presser Scholar. The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award annually celebrates students, selected by their music faculty during their final year of study, "who have achieved a high level of music and academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and contributed to an inclusive community." It is the most prestigious undergraduate honor in music at Angelo State. Kjar will graduate from ASU in May with her Bachelor of Music degree with all-level teacher certification. Her primary instrument is clarinet, and she has performed as a member of the ASU Ram Band, ASU Wind Ensemble, ASU Symphony Orchestra, ASU Symphonic Band and ASU Woodwind Ensembles. She has also performed on her secondary instruments, trombone and tuba, with the ASU Symphonic Band. Angelo State's Lockett Wins National Physics Scholarship Award

Jaylon Lockett of Missouri City, a sophomore physics major at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year through the TEAM-UP Together Scholarship Program (TUTSP) that is administered by the national Society of Physics Students. The TUTSP is a cooperative effort of the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Astronomical Society, American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society and Society of Physics Students. It was launched in 2022 to aid Black and African American students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in physics and astronomy - and who show financial need. Fewer than 50 first-time TEAM-UP Together Scholarships have been awarded each year nationwide, and Lockett is the first ASU student to receive a scholarship award. Angelo State Meat Science Students Win SMA Scholarships

Four students in the Angelo State University Department of Agriculture have earned various scholarships from the Southwest Meat Association (SMA) Foundation for the upcoming academic year. The SMA Foundation was formed in 1987 to assist students pursuing careers in the meat industry. This year's scholarships were awarded at the SMA annual convention in Galveston. ASU graduate student Kami Digby of Hermleigh received a 2022 SMA Hall of Honor Scholarship. Receiving 2022 SMA Foundation Scholarships are undergraduate students Victor Rosas of San Angelo and Megan Sorenson of San Antonio, and graduate student Joshua Jones of Falls City. Angelo State Physics Student Wins Columbia Crew Memorial Scholarship

Garath Vetters if Kingsland, a physics major at Angelo State University, has been awarded a 2022-23 STEM Columbia Crew Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 by the Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSGC). The TGSC and the Aviation and Space Foundation of Texas in partnership with NASA established the scholarships to recognize high-quality students and encourage their consideration of graduate studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Vetters is one of only 25 Texas college students to receive a scholarship for 2022-23. See more details on the TSGC website.

Angelo State's Tarbet Wins State Department Scholarship

Price Tarbet of Big Spring, a senior history major and Russian minor at Angelo State University, has been awarded a 2022 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for Russian language studies by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Shortly after he graduates from ASU in May, Tarbet will depart June 5 for 12 weeks of intensive Russian language and cultural training at the American University of Central Asia in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan. The U.S. Department of State sponsors the CLS Program as part of a larger U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans mastering foreign languages deemed critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. The CLS Program was launched in 1972, and Tarbet is the first ASU student to earn the scholarship. See more details at angelo.edu/news.

Angelo State's Poole Earns Rodeo Houston Scholarship

Cameron Poole of Kerrville, a junior animal science major at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $4,000 2021 Rodeo Achievement Scholarship from Rodeo Houston. The Achievement Scholarships are awarded to current Rodeo scholars who are working toward an undergraduate degree, have completed four semesters and at least 60 hours of coursework, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher at a Texas college or university. Each student will receive an additional $4,000 scholarship for each eligible semester. Poole is a regular on the ASU Dean's List, ASU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. Angelo State's Preston Wins National Alpha Chi Scholarship

Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Mich., a junior at Angelo State University, has earned an Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship of $2,000 in the Alpha Chi Honor Society 2021 National Scholarship Competition. A philosophy major, Preston's scholarly work submitted for the competition is titled "Aristotelianism in Wordsworth's Preface to 'Lyrical Ballads.'" Her scholarship award was announced during the virtual Alpha Chi National Convention. Also a member of the ASU Belles volleyball team, Preston recently earned All-Lone Star Conference honors after helping lead the Belles to a second straight LSC championship.

Angelo State's Holland Wins Top National STEM Scholarship

Katie Holland of Aledo, a second-year biology student in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been awarded a 2021 Goldwater Scholarship, which is considered the nation's most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Holland is one of just 410 college students from across the U.S., and one of only 22 in Texas, to earn a 2021 Goldwater Scholarship. More than 1,250 students were nominated for the scholarship this year, representing 438 colleges and universities. The scholarship provides each recipient up to $7,500 a year to cover the cost of tuition, mandatory fees, books, and room and board for up to four semesters or until graduation. Angelo State ROTC Cadet Wins National Scholarship for Russian Studies

Kevin Rudaski of Waldorf, Md., a cadet in Angelo State University's Air Force ROTC Detachment 847, has been awarded a Project Global Officer (Project GO) Scholarship that will fund Russian language studies through Indiana University this summer. Project GO is an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office that provides scholarships to ROTC students for critical language studies. Rudaski's scholarship will pay for his tuition, fees, books and other expenses to participate in a virtual Russian language and culture program from June 1 to July 30 in Indiana University's Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. Angelo State's Abernathy Wins Prestigious Engineering Scholarship

Linda Abernathy of San Diego, Calif., a senior civil engineering student at Angelo State University, has been awarded this year's $5,000 Molitoris Leadership Scholarship for Undergraduates from the Heart of Texas Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS), an international organization dedicated to advancing women in transportation careers. Abernathy will be honored at the WTS Heart of Texas Chapter Gala in April in Austin. Only two undergraduate scholarships are awarded each year by the Heart of Texas Chapter. By winning a chapter scholarship, Abernathy will compete with the other chapter winners for a corresponding WTS Foundation Scholarship that will be awarded at the WTS National Conference in May. Angelo State's Calder Awarded TXCPA Scholarship

Jenna Calder of Belton, an accounting student at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. Calder is one of only 51 Texas college students awarded a 2020-21 TXCPA Scholarship. To be eligible, students must be accounting majors at a Texas college or university and have the intent of becoming a Texas Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation. They must have a high cumulative college GPA and perform well in accounting classes. More details are available here.

Keely Shaw, a history major and member of the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been awarded the 2018 Texas State Genealogical Society (TxSGS) Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Angelo State's Gibson Awarded TXCPA Scholarship

Caylee Gibson of San Angelo, a student at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA). An integrated professional accountancy major, Gibson is one of just 51 Texas college students awarded a 2020-21 TXCPA Scholarship. To be eligible, students must be accounting majors at a Texas college or university and have the intent of becoming a Texas Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation. They must have a high cumulative college GPA and perform well in accounting classes. More details are available here.
