ASU Economics Students Present Research at National Conference

Five Angelo State University economics majors were selected to present their undergraduate research projects at the recent 50th annual meeting of the Association of Private Enterprise Education (APEE) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Only 42 undergraduate students nationwide were chosen through a competitive application process to make research presentations in the APEE conference's Undergraduate Research Competition. The ASU students who presented their research were: Samuel Helm of San Angelo - "When Property Rights Fail: The Rise of Religious Hostility" Kaleb Morkovsky of El Paso - "Does Ideological Homogeneity Influence Economic Outcomes?" Caden Olliges of McKinney - "Innovation Shocks and Public Debt: The Fiscal Potential of AI" Isaac Ortegon of Eden - "Does Childhood Welfare Exposure Shape Family Structure?" Matthew Zwicke of San Angelo - "Rent Control under Immigration Pressure: Evidence from California" All five ASU students were also awarded grants from the Texas Tech University Free Market Institute to cover their airfare and lodging for the APEE conference. ASU Ram Media Students Win Awards at State Convention

Representatives of Angelo State University's student-run Ram Media outlets brought home 11 awards after competing in various contests at the recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Convention in Denton. The TIPA journalism/media competition consists of two parts - the Annual Contest that solicits submission of entries previously published or broadcast in the past academic year, and the Live Contests that take place between students attending the convention. Ram Media is a component of the Department of Communication and Mass Media. Outlets include the Ram TV television station, the Ram Page digital newspaper and the Ram Radio internet radio station, as well as Ram TV Sports that broadcasts live ASU intercollegiate sports on the FloSports Network. ASU Business Students Excel at National Innovation Contest

A team of four Angelo State University undergraduate business students placed in the top eight out of more than 50 teams from universities across the U.S. in the Presentation Pro contest at the recent 2026 National Collegiate Innovation Championship in Nashville, Tenn. The Presentation Pro contest consisted of teams of up to five students that were tasked with making 10-minute, live pitch presentations for fictitious start-up companies in two categories: Own Company and Hypothetical Company. In the Own Company category, the ASU team pitched a venture idea for a company that places refrigerated lockers in high-density residential high-rise buildings as the final link in the growing grocery and food delivery industry. Competing against teams from primarily Division I universities, the ASU team included four senior management majors: Jeff Isenhart of San Dimas, Calif. Han Ly of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Abel Prince of Kingsland Anali Rivera of Del Rio This marked the first time an ASU team has competed in the National Collegiate Innovation Championship, which is a component of Baylor University's National Collegiate Business Championships program. ASU Business Grad Students Win Gartner AI Case Study Contest

A team of four Angelo State University graduate students in the Norris-Vincent College of Business took first place in Gartner Consulting's inaugural Texas Case Study Competition that culminated Nov. 12 in Austin. The competition entailed teams of 3-5 graduate business students submitting real-life case studies on implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to increase efficiency and enhance operations across an unnamed Texas government agency. Gartner consultants acted as coaches for each team. ASU team members were Tatiana Alvarez, Ava James and Andres Ybarra of San Angelo and Katelyn St. John of Hamlin. Competing against 11 other teams from Rice University, Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston and the University of Texas, the ASU team won the preliminary round of the contest in October to advance to the finals in Austin. At the finals, the top three teams from the first round gave in-person presentations of their analyses and strategic plans to a group of five judges that included top IT exectives from several Texas government agencies. Angelo State's Shetler Wins National Research Paper Award

Kaylen Shetler of Chesapeake, Va., a junior in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has received the 2022-23 Robert A. Kilmarx Award for the Best Military, Intelligence or National Security Strategic Analysis Paper from the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) in Washington, D.C. An intelligence and analysis/mathematics double-major, Shetler won the Kilmarx Award for her paper titled "Defining Weapons of Mass Destruction in a New Age of Cyberwarfare." The award also includes a $1,000 prize and publication of her paper in the CSPC online anthology, The Fellows Review, this summer. Shetler submitted her paper as the centerpiece of her 2022-23 CSPC Presidential Fellowship, and she is one of only five students out of a cohort of 48 Fellows to be selected for an award. Angelo State's Kilpatrick Wins National Conference Award

Kristen Kilpatrick of Abilene, a political science major at Angelo State University, earned a Distinguished Delegate Award at the 25th annual Eugene Scassa Mock Organization of American States (ESMOAS) Collegiate Summit of the Americas Conference at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. In the conference's Model Summit of the Americas competition, Kilpatrick earned a Distinguished Delegate Award for her performance on the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development Committee. The award was given for her work in committee arguing for passage of a proposal, debating various other proposals, and using parliamentary procedure. Also during the conference, Kilpatrick was elected ESMOAS secretary general for 2022. She is also president of the ASU Student Government Association. ESMOAS is an academically-centered program that brings together the nation's best and brightest college students to debate the issues facing the nations in North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Angelo State's Burch Wins National Research Paper Award

Evelyn Burch, a senior at Angelo State University, has received the 2017-18 Robert A. Kilmarx Award for the Best Military, Intelligence or National Security Strategic Analysis Paper from the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) in Washington, D.C. A political science major from Clinton, Md., Burch won the Kilmarx Award for her paper titled "Projecting Power: China and the United States' Struggle for Dominance in the Era of Xi and Trump." Angelo State's Denham Wins State Mammalogy Research Award

Allie Denham of San Antonio, a senior biology major at Angelo State University, won the top prize for her undergraduate research poster at the annual meeting of the Texas Society of Mammalogists (TSM) held Feb. 21-23 at the Texas Tech University Llano River Field Station in Junction. Denham won the Clyde Jones Award for Best Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation in mammalian molecular biology, evolution and systematics. Her research project is titled "Genetic variation within a species of parasitic nematode, Skrjabingylus chitwoodorum, in skunks." Dr. Loren Ammerman, ASU professor of biology, is her faculty research mentor. More details are available at angelo.edu.
