Angelo State's Lowden Earns Prestigious NSA Internship

Hailey Lowden of San Angelo, a senior computer science major at Angelo State University, has been selected to participate in the National Security Agency's (NSA) 2025 Future Computing Summer Internship Program at the NSA Laboratory for Physical Sciences in Catonsville, Maryland. The 10-week internship program was established in 2022 with the goal to expose participating students to High Performance Computing (HPC), a field critical to national security, discovery and technological innovation. Lowden is the first ASU student to earn a place in the prestigious program. Under the mentorship of NSA professionals, she will gain valuable hands-on experience and enhance her technical skills while working on a research project aimed at advancing HPC capabilities. As a NSA intern, Lowden will also receive an $850 weekly stipend, as well as funded transportation, lodging and meals. At the conclusion of her internship in August, she will present the results of her research to NSA senior leaders, technical personnel, and research and academic partners. A student worker in ASU's award-winning Regional Security Operations Center, Lowden is also an active member of the Guardians of the Grid cybersecurity student organization and a regular on the ASU Dean's List. She has previously competed in the Hivestorm collegiate cyber defense competition through the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS), and placed in the top 100 in the nation. Angelo State Political Science Student Earns Congressional Internship

Joe Chaney of Daphne, Ala., a senior political science major at Angelo State University, has been selected for the ASU Department of Political Science and Philosophy's 2024 Government and Public Service Internship Program in Washington, D.C. Chaney will spend this fall semester working as an intern for U.S. Congressman August Pfluger, who represents the 11th District of Texas that includes San Angelo. During his internship, Chaney will live at the Texas Tech House with other interns from Texas Tech University and will receive an $8,000 stipend to help defray the costs of living in Washington, D.C. He will also earn six ASU credit hours in political science. A former foster care youth, Chaney is a member of ASU's Fostering Ram Success program. He previously completed a successful internship in the San Angelo City Attorney's Office, and he is also active in the Political Science Association and Kappa Sigma fraternity. A regular on the ASU Dean's List, he is scheduled to graduate in December with his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in political science with minors in English and history. Angelo State Grad Student Selected for Congressional Internship

Maribel Lopez of Del Rio, a second-year graduate student at Angelo State University, has earned an internship in the office of U.S. Congressman August Pfluger for the 2023 spring semester. Lopez is pursuing her master's degree in homeland security at Angelo State. She is particularly interested in immigration and human trafficking. She is one of two Texas college students selected to intern in Rep. Pfluger's Washington, D.C., office this spring. Her duties will include answering phone calls, working on legislative research, and helping with other daily office functions. Pfluger, a republican, represents the 11th District of Texas.

Angelo State's King Earns Congressional Internship

Bailey King of San Angelo, a political science and communication double-major at Angelo State University, has been selected for the ASU Political Science and Philosophy Department's 2021 Government and Public Service Internship Program in Washington, D.C. King will spend the upcoming fall semester working as an intern for a member of the U.S. Congress, and will be placed in either a congressional or senate office based primarily on her interests in issues. She will live at the Texas Tech House with other interns from Texas Tech University and will receive an $8,000 stipend to help defray the costs of living in Washington, D.C. Angelo State's Stormes Earns Fulbright Research Internship

Zoey Stormes of Keller, a junior in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been selected for a 2021 Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Research Internship. Fewer than 100 of the fully-funded summer internships are awarded each year. Selectees will spend 10-12 weeks this summer working with research teams from across the U.S. and Canada on projects supervised by Canadian university faculty members. Stormes, a biology major, will participate in a project titled "Examining the Role of Technology to Support Aging in Place in Rural and Northern Communities" led by Prof. Shannon Freeman of the University of Northern British Columbia-Prince George. Angelo State's Lewis Earns Fulbright Research Internship

Jazlynn Lewis of Bandera, a sophomore in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been selected for a 2021 Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Research Internship. Fewer than 100 of the fully-funded summer internships are awarded each year. Selectees will spend 10-12 weeks this summer working with research teams from across the U.S. and Canada on projects supervised by Canadian university faculty members. Lewis, an animal science major, will participate in a project titled "Understanding the role of blood flow alterations in the development of equine laminitis" led by Prof. Julia Montgomery of the University of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon. Destiny Brown of Austin, a political science major at Angelo State University, has been selected for the ASU Political Science and Philosophy Department's 2020 Government and Public Service Internship Program in Washington, D.C. If the status of the COVID-19 pandemic permits, Brown will spend the upcoming fall semester working as an intern for a member of the U.S. Congress. She will live at the Texas Tech House with other interns from Texas Tech University and will receive an $8,000 stipend to help defray the costs of living in Washington, D.C. Angelo State Engineering Student Earns Dept. of Defense Scholarship/Internship

Logan Drake of Schertz, a junior mechanical engineering major at Angelo State University, has been selected for the U.S. Department of Defense's 2020 Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program. To be eligible for SMART, students must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 21 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields approved by the Department of Defense. Fewer than 20% of SMART applicants are selected each year, and Drake is the first ASU student to be chosen as a SMART Scholar. More details are available at angelo.edu.

Angelo State History Student Earns Library of Congress Internship

Keely Shaw of San Angelo, a senior history major and honors student at Angelo State University, is one of just 40 college students nationwide selected for the 2020 Library of Congress Junior Fellows summer internship program. The Junior Fellows program is a 10-week paid internship designed to expose the fellows to the breadth and depth of the work that takes place at the Library of Congress, the world's largest library. Joshua Buske, a junior at Angelo State University, has been selected for the ASU Political Science and Philosophy Department's 2019 Government and Public Service Internship Program in Washington, D.C. A Goldsboro native, Buske is a double major in political science and history. He will spend the upcoming fall semester working as an intern for U.S. Congressman Michael Conaway, who represents the 11th Congressional District that includes San Angelo. Buske will live at the Texas Tech House with other interns from Texas Tech University and will receive an $8,000 stipend to help defray the costs of living in Washington, D.C.
