ASU Handball Club Wins Doug Randolph Cup

The Angelo State University Handball Club won the inaugural Doug Randolph Cup at the recent Spring 2024 Aggieland Classic at Texas A&M University in College Station. The Doug Randolph Cup competition featured a round-robin format with the ASU team facing off in head-to-head matchups against teams from the University of Texas, Texas A&M and Missouri State University. In its three matches, the ASU Handball Club outscored UT, 150-43, outscored Texas A&M, 111-97, and outscored MSU, 139-78, for a total of 400 points to finish at the top of the standings. Individually for ASU: Aoife Holden went 3-0 in women's singles (90 points) Taigan Rivers & Kinzi Jo Leon went 2-1 in women's doubles (83 points) Austin Colwell & Israel Lopez Jr. went 2-1 in men's doubles (76 points) Jonathan White & Dylan Whitley went 1-2 in men's doubles (62 points) Diarmuid Mulkerrins went 3-0 in men's singles (89 points) The new tournament is named in honor Doug Randolph, an avid handball player and founder of the Lubbock-based Randolph Foundation for Higher Education Inc. ASU's Johnson Earns Delta Sigma Pi Collegian of the Year Honor

Daysha Johnson of San Angelo, a graduate student in Angelo State University's Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, has been named the 2024 South Central Province Collegian of the Year by the Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) national professional business fraternity. The Collegian of the Year Award for each of the five DSP provinces is one of the highest honors for its collegiate members. Johnson was recognized for exemplifying the spirit and leadership of DSP through her time in ASU's Eta Theta chapter. She was selected for the award over nominees representing the 34 other collegiate chapters in the South Central Province, which includes chapters at institutions in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Oklahoma. Additionally, Johnson was named the 2024 DSP Southwestern Region Collegian of the Year. The Southwestern Region includes student chapters at ASU, Baylor University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, University of North Texas, University of Texas-Arlington and University of Texas-Dallas, as well as several alumni chapters. Already an ASU alumna after earning her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2022, Johnson served as president of ASU's Eta Theta chapter from 2021-23. She has also served as chancellor, vice president of operations and webmaster/historian, as well as on committees dedicated to fundraising, community service, pledge education, ritual, Homecoming and merchandising. Angelo State Handball Club Wins National Championship

The Angelo State University Handball Club men's team brought home both a team and an individual national title from the recent 69th U.S. Handball Association National Collegiate Championships at Missouri State University. The ASU team took first place in the Men's B Division to win the national championship ahead of runner-up Texas A&M University. ASU's Jacob O'Dell of San Angelo won an individual national championship in the Men's B3 Division, defeating William Henry of Texas A&M in the final. O'Dell made it to the final by defeating his teammate, Anthone Luna of San Angelo, in a semifinal tiebreaker, 11-10. Thirteen men's and women's players represented ASU at the national tournament - all of them first-year players. See more details at angelo.edu/news.

Angelo State Ram Powerlifters Win Medals at First Home Meet

Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club hosted its first-ever home meet sanctioned by U.S.A. Powerlifting, and eight club members earned first-place medals at the inaugural ASU Big Horn Bash on Jan. 22 in the Houston Harte University Center. Sixty lifters from around the state, including high school, college and adult competitors, participated in the meet in various categories of both "equipped" and "raw" contests. Equipped contests allow competitors to wear special clothing, including bench shirts, squat suits and knee wraps, that allow them to lift heavier weights. Angelo State Ram Powerlifters Medal at Collegiate Cup

Two members of Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club brought home medals, including one first-place Gold Medal, from the U.S.A. Powerlifting 2021 Collegiate Cup competition in San Antonio. Competing against lifters from colleges and universities across Texas, ASU's Britney George of Hawley took first place in the 167 pounds Raw Collegiate contest, and Annabelle Butts of Lubbock took third place in the 116 pounds Raw Collegiate contest. Lifters complete three attempts each at squat, bench press and deadlift. The qualifying total is the sum of the highest weight lifted in each of the three disciplines. George and Butts posted the following top weights: Britney George Bench Press - 192 pounds Squat - 358 pounds Deadlift - 385 pounds Annabelle Butts Bench Press - 133 pounds Squat - 187 pounds Deadlift - 275 pounds Unlike intramural teams, ASU club sports teams are registered student organizations that are directed and funded by the Office of Student Life and overseen by the Sports Club Council.

Two members of Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club brought home first-place medals from the U.S.A. Powerlifting 2021 Longhorn Open competition at the University of Texas at Austin. Competing against lifters from colleges and universities across Texas, ASU's Jeremiah Fultz of Cedar Hill took first place in the 163 pounds Raw Collegiate contest, and Jaylen Montgomery of Waco took first place in the 145 pounds Equipped Collegiate contest. Lifters complete three attempts each at squat, bench press and deadlift. The qualifying total is the sum of the highest weight lifted in each of the three disciplines. Angelo State Powerlifters Medal at Texas Strength Classic

Six members of Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club brought home a host of awards, including three first-place medals, from the U.S.A. Powerlifting (USAPL) Texas Strength Classic competition held March 1 at Texas Strength Systems in San Antonio. Jaylen Montgomery of Hewitt, Yakariel "Kory" Young of Killeen, and Nicholas Propst of Atascosa took first place in their respective divisions. Eli Perez of Brownwood, Joshua Ontiveros of Kerrville, and Roberto Riojas of Eagle Pass also posted top performances for the Rams. More details are available at angelo.edu.

Angelo State Business Students Featured in Professional Panel

Six members of Angelo State University's chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, America's most prestigious business fraternity, were chosen to participate in the featured panel at the Meet The Chapter event on Jan. 21 in Angelo State's Houston Harte University Center. These members addressed not only current members of the organization, but more importantly, potential future members who are currently going through recruitment. The distinguished speakers spoke about their time in Delta Sigma Pi, the memories they have made, and the legacy ASU's Eta Theta Chapter has started. The speakers included Taylor Avant of Addison, Daniel Dixon of San Angelo, Ryan Elderton of Goldthwaite, Thalia Lopez of Fort Stockton, James Marques of Round Rock, and Eryck Rodriguez of Ciudad Acuna, Mexico.

Angelo State's Vasquez Named National Collegian of the Year

Cody Vasquez of Midland, a graduate student in business at Angelo State University, was named the 2020 National Collegian of the Year by the Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) national professional business fraternity at the DSP South Central LEAD Provincial Conference held March 6-8 in Dallas. The National Collegian of the Year Award is the top DSP honor for its collegiate members. Vasquez will begin a two-year term representing collegiate members on the DSP Board of Directors in August. He also received a $5,000 scholarship funded by Mr. and Mrs. Sydney A. Sparks through the DSP Leadership Foundation, as well as a pearl-and-ruby fraternity badge. See the full story at angelo.edu.

Angelo State Business Fraternity Named Tops in Nation

Angelo State University's Eta Theta chapter of the Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) national professional business fraternity received the 2018-19 R. Nelson Mitchell Outstanding Collegiate Chapter Award at the DSP 2019 Grand Chapter Congress held Aug. 14-18 in Atlanta. The R. Nelson Mitchell Award is the most prestigious honor a DSP collegiate chapter can attain. The ASU chapter won the award over close to 300 collegiate chapters nationwide - and also won nine regional and provincial awards at the Grand Chapter Congress. Angelo State Rugby Players Named NSCRO Women's All-Americans

Two members of Angelo State University's Rambelle Rugby Club, Rebecca Nyul and Amanda Steffins, have been named to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) 2018-19 Women's All-America Team. Nyul is a health science professions major from Seguin. Steffins is a civil engineering major from San Angelo. They helped lead the Rambelle Rugby Club to qualification for the 2019 NSCRO Women's 7s National Championship Tournament in April in Cheswich, Penn. Rambelle Rugby finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation. The NSCRO selection committee worked with coaches around the country to identify the 25 exceptional women who make up the annual Women's All-Americans list. Angelo State Chemistry Student Group Wins National Awards

Angelo State University's student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has received an Outstanding Award from the national ACS Committee on Education for the chapter's activities during the 2017-18 academic year. Additionally, for the eighth straight year, the ASU chapter has received a Green Chemistry Award for outreach activities from the national ACS Green Chemistry Institute. ASU Business Fraternity Wins National Award

Angelo State University's Eta Theta chapter of the Delta Sigma Pi national professional business fraternity received the 2017-18 Most Improved Collegiate Chapter Award at the recent 2018 Delta Sigma Pi LEAD School professional development conference in Dallas. Thirty-three ASU student chapter members attended the LEAD (Leadership and Excellence Academy for Deltasigs) School and accepted their chapter's first national award since 1985.

Rambelle Rugby Posts First Win of Season

Rambelle Rugby posts first win of the season On Sept. 15, Angelo State's club sports team Rambelle Rugby posted their first win of the season against Texas Tech Women's Rugby. According to the student newspaper, the Ram Page, for the first time ever the Rambelles were competing in the 15s division which is "the largest and most recognized division in rugby." The Ram Page quoted freshman and first year player Drew Bratton, "Our first game felt incredible to be a part of, such a great team filled with great people and it meant a lot to me because that win was the start of my rugby experience." The club president is Amanda Steffins. The club's purpose is to unite women of many diversities to play rugby. To offer and promote leadership and camaraderie to women interested in rugby and to uphold the laws of the International Rugby Board. To engage female students of Angelo State University in campus organizations. To inspire persistence, dedication, and responsibility in not only Rambelle Rugby, but in academics while attending Angelo State University. To encourage tradition and enhance the support of rugby in the San Angelo Community.
