Eighteen members of the Angelo State University Rams track and field team have earned All-Lone Star Conference accolades for their performances at the 2022 LSC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where the Rams finished third overall. Rams making the All-LSC first team are Victor Ertelt of San Angelo (winner-javelin), Jacobee Jones of Rowlett (winner-pole vault) and Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, (javelin, 110-meter hurdles). Rams All-LSC second teamers include Kyle Lumpkins of Junction (decathlon, 400-meter hurdles), Nicholas Ellisor of Coldspring (400 meters), Luis Alvarado of Laredo (javelin), Canon Andrews of Iraan (hammer), William Cole Paxton of Brackettville (shot put), Marshall Creed Goode of Cross Plains (decathlon), Emmett Seals of Rowlett (400 meters), Thomas David Morgan of Lubbock (100 meters), Braden Jetton of Brownwood (4x100 relay) and Ja'Micah Polk of Corsicana (4x100 relay). Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village and Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield, infielders on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, have been named to the 2022 Academic All-District 6 Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. A junior second baseman, Lerma is majoring in finance and carrying a 3.94 GPA. She has also been named to the All-Lone Star Conference first team, LSC All-Academic Team, and the NFCA and D2CCA All-South Central Region second teams. She also earned a LSC Golden Glove Award for her play on defense. Scheurer, a junior third baseman, is majoring in industrial/organizational psychology and carrying a 3.77 GPA. She has also been named LSC Player of the Year and Academic Player of the Year, and D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year. She was also named to the NFCA All-South Central Region first team and has made the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year Top 25 list. Jackson Hardy of Silsbee, a senior outfielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named to the 2022 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team for his performances on the field and in the classroom. The All-Academic Team is selected by the LSC's sports information directors, who select players based on both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible, student-athletes must have played in at least 50% of the team's contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average for their entire collegiate career. Hardy is majoring in business administration at ASU, and he makes the LSC All-Academic Team for the second straight year. He was also named to the LSC All-Defensive Team after posting a .991 fielding percentage in center field and committing just one error all season. The Rams won the LSC regular-season title and are currently ranked No. 1 in the South Central Region as they host the finals of the LSC Tournament this weekend. Austin Beck of Allen, a freshman infielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the 2022 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year for his performance during the regular season. In his first season, Beck solidifed himself as the Rams' starting second baseman and lead-off hitter. He finished third in the LSC in batting average (.401), second in runs scored (69), third in walks (34), tied for fifth in hits (75) and on-base percentage (.502) and first in stolen bases (27). He also notched four home runs and 49 RBIs, and he was also named to the All-LSC first team at second base. Four players on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have been named to the 2022 Lone Star Conference All-Defensive Team for their performances during the regular season. Senior catcher Tyler Boggs of Grand Junction, Colo., senior first baseman Aaron Walters of Center Point, redshirt-senior third baseman Jordan Williams of Round Rock, and senior outfielder Jackson Hardy of Silsbee were all named to the LSC All-Defensive Team. Williams makes the team for the second straight season. The All-Defensive Team members were selected by a vote of the LSC's head coaches based on defensive performance alone for all nine fielding positions. Nine players on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have earned All-Lone Star Conference accolades for their performances during the 2022 regular season. Angelo State University's chapter of the Order of the Sword & Shield national honor society recently inducted 28 new student members for the 2021-22 academic year. The Order of the Sword & Shield is the only academic and professional honor society dedicated exclusively to cybersecurity, homeland security, intelligence, emergency management and all protective security disciplines. The ASU chapter was chartered in 2015 and is one of only 92 Official Academic Chapters in the U.S., including just five chapters in Texas. To be eligible for induction, students must be majoring in homeland security, intelligence or other protective security field at an accredited institution of higher education, and must have completed at least 50% of the credit hours required for graduation. Undergraduate students must have at least a 3.25 grade point average (GPA), and graduate students must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield, the third baseman for the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and LSC Academic Player of the Year for the 2022 season. A graduate student, Scheurer is only the third player in LSC softball history to win both awards in the same season. She started every game this season and posted a .379 batting average, 22 home runs and 70 RBI. She is third in NCAA Division II in home runs and RBI. In the classroom, she is working toward her master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology and is carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also named to the All-LSC first team and the LSC All-Academic Team. Three players from the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team have earned multiple 2022 All-South Central Region honors from the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Junior third baseman Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield was named the D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year and is an all-region first-team selection by both the D2CCA and NFCA. She is batting .378 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs, and she has made the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player of the Year Top 25 list. Sophomore pitcher Genesis Armendariz of Hobbs, N.M., was named to the All-South Central Region first team by the NFCA and the all-region second team by the D2CCA. She has posted a 19-5 record with a 2.40 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 134 innings. Junior second baseman Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village was named to the All-South Central Region second team by both the D2CCA and NFCA. She has posted a .353 batting average and .492 on-base percentage with 35 walks and 46 stolen bases, and she was named to the LSC Golden Glove Team for her outstanding defense. Two Angelo State University Rambelles softball players have earned Lone Star Conference Golden Glove Awards for their defensive play during the 2022 regular season. Sophomore cather Keilei Garcia of Hemet, Calif., and junior second baseman Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village are ASU's 2022 Golden Glove Award winners. Garcia posted a .971 fielding percentage behind the plate, threw out 15 baserunners and allowed only 21 stolen bases all season, the lowest total in the LSC. Lerma won her second straight Golden Glove after posting a .982 fielding percentage at second base. Four members of the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team have collectively earned the Lone Star Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor for Week 7 of the outdoor season ending May 1. ASU's 4x400-meter relay team made up of Zykia McDaniel of Converse, Genevie Rivera of San Antonio, Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, and Shiean Walters of Coleman took first place at the Oliver Jackson Twilight meet in Abilene. Their time of 3:41.73 improved their provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships and is the fifth-fastest time in all of D-II this season. Angelo State University honored its 2022 Outstanding Graduate Students during the annual Graduate Research Symposium and Awards Ceremony on April 29. Students representing 22 different graduate degree programs and all five of ASU's academic colleges were recognized during the ceremony. Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Michigan, has been selected to receive Angelo State University's 2022 Presidential Award as the top graduate in her class, while five other ASU graduating seniors have been selected for 2021-22 Distinguished Student Awards from their respective academic colleges. Preston will be recognized at ASU's May 13-14 commencement ceremonies, along with the five Distinguished Student Award honorees. Dianela Rodriguez, a junior from Mexico City, Mexico, was named the LSC Women's Player of the Year and was also an All-LSC first-team selection for singles. Graduate students Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden, and Valentina Gonzalez of Medellin, Colombia, were named to the All-LSC first team for doubles. Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden, a graduate student on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Academic Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season. The All-Academic Team is chosen by the LSC's sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible, student-athletes must have played in at least 50% of team's contests, reached sophomore standing, completed at least one full academic year, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average for their entire collegiate career. Eighteen Angelo State University student-athletes received a variety of individual postseason awards at the annual Holland's Sports Banquet hosted by the ASU Athletic Department and sponsored by Holland's Jewelry. Fourteen student-athletes received the Holland's Award for their respective sports as voted on by their teammates. At the banquet, 14 students were given the Holland's award in their respective sports as voted on by their teammates. The winner exemplifies what it means to be an ASU student-athlete in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. Ayda Guler of Sydney, Australia, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 12 of the spring season ending April 24. As the Belles went 2-0 over the final weekend of the regular season, Guler went 4-0 across singles and doubles play. She helped lead the Belles to a road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and and a home win over Western New Mexico to clinch a share of the LSC regular-season title. This is Guler's first LSC weekly award of her ASU career. The Belles open play in the LSC Tournament on Thursday against UT Tyler in Arlington. Maria Sierra Sanz of Gijon, Asturias, Spain, a member of the Angelo State University Rambelles golf team, has earned All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention for her performance during the 2021-22 season. Sierra Sanz finished in the top 10 in six of the season's eight tournaments, including runner-up performances at the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate. She posted an average score of 79.43 over 21 rounds. She is the first ASU golfer to earn an All-LSC postseason honor since the 2015-16 season. Seven student members of Angelo State University's athletic training staff have been recognized with 2021-22 Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Student Academic Awards. Each academic year, the LSC recognizes student athletic trainers who devote numerous hours to assist with the operation of the athletics department while also finding the time to excel in the classroom. To be eligible, student athletic trainers must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average with a minimum of 24 credit hours. Ramitha Irrinki of Round Rock, a freshman on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 10 of the spring season ending on April 10. As the Belles swept three road matches over the weekend, Irrinki went 5-0 to help the Belles extend their winning streak to five matches overall. Against Arkansas Tech, she won, 7-5, in doubles before winning at line five in three sets in the Belles' 4-3 win. She and partner Ayda Guler won at line two, 6-0, as the Belles swept UAFS 7-0 overall. She closed out the week with a big performance against No. 6 Cameron, as she and Guler won, 7-6 (7-5), to clinch the doubles point. She then picked up 6-1, 6-2 win at line six as ASU upset the Aggies 5-2. This spring, Irrinki is 12-3 in singles play and 13-5 in doubles play. Price Tarbet of Big Spring, a senior history major and Russian minor at Angelo State University, has been awarded a 2022 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for Russian language studies by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Shortly after he graduates from ASU in May, Tarbet will depart June 5 for 12 weeks of intensive Russian language and cultural training at the American University of Central Asia in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan. The U.S. Department of State sponsors the CLS Program as part of a larger U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans mastering foreign languages deemed critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. Angelo State University's chapter of the Alpha Chi national honor society recently inducted 20 new members for the spring 2022 semester during a ceremony in the Houston Harte University Center. Alpha Chi is one of the nation's most prestigious honor societies that is open to students majoring in all academic disciplines. To be eligible, students must rank in the top 10% of seniors at their college or university, or in the top 7.5% of juniors. Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet March 31 - April 2, Kryukov won the heptathlon with 7,529 points. He posted first-place finishes in the long jump, discus and javelin, and he finished second in three other events. He currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the decathlon. Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, a freshman on the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet, Spence won the heptathlon with 5,371 points, beating her previous personal best by over 500 points. Four members of Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club finished in the top five in their respective contests, including one Gold Medalist and one national runner-up, at the U.S.A. Powerlifting Collegiate National Meet in Lombard, Illinois. Michael Vargas of Ozona won the Gold Medal in the 181-pound weight class of the Men's Collegiate Equipped contest to bring home a national title for ASU. Other top ASU finishers at the national meet, by category and weight class, were: Melissa Nunez of Monahans: 2nd Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 97 pounds Natalie Walker of Greenville: 3rd Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 114 pounds Britney George of Hawley: 4th Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 165 pounds Lifters complete three attempts each at squat, bench press and deadlift. The qualifying total is the sum of the highest weight lifted in each of the three disciplines. Vargas, the club president, posted a total sum weight of 1,697 pounds to win his Gold Medal. Autumn Cleveland of Roby and Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Michigan, seniors in the Angelo State University Honors Program, won top prizes for their research presentations at the 2022 Great Plains Honors Council (GPHC) Conference in Wichita, Kansas. Cleveland, an English major, and Preston, an English/philosophy double major, each earned a Dennis Boe Award for exceptional research and writing by an undergraduate honors student. Each was presented a plaque and a $200 cash prize, and their work will be published in The Windmill, a scholarly journal featuring undergraduate research. Only three Dennis Boe Awards are presented annually. Cleveland's oral presentation and paper detailed her research on "Monstrous Paradigms: Frankenstein's Professors and the History of Science."
