Angelo State's Sierra Sanz Earns Women's Golf All-LSC Honors

Maria Sierra Sanz of Gijon, Asturias, Spain, a member of the Angelo State University Rambelles golf team, has earned All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention for her performance during the 2021-22 season. Sierra Sanz finished in the top 10 in six of the season's eight tournaments, including runner-up performances at the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate. She posted an average score of 79.43 over 21 rounds. She is the first ASU golfer to earn an All-LSC postseason honor since the 2015-16 season. Angelo State Announces Spring 2022 Phi Kappa Phi Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society recently inducted its spring 2022 class of 57 new student members during a special virtual initiation ceremony on Facebook. PKP is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for students in all academic disciplines. Invitations to join PKP are extended to juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and to seniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. Angelo State Students Earn LSC Athletic Training Student Academic Awards

Seven student members of Angelo State University's athletic training staff have been recognized with 2021-22 Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Student Academic Awards. Each academic year, the LSC recognizes student athletic trainers who devote numerous hours to assist with the operation of the athletics department while also finding the time to excel in the classroom. To be eligible, student athletic trainers must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average with a minimum of 24 credit hours. The qualifications mirror those required of student-athletes to gain LSC All-Academic recognition. See more details on the LSC website.

Angelo State's Irrinki Named LSC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Ramitha Irrinki of Round Rock, a freshman on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 10 of the spring season ending on April 10. As the Belles swept three road matches over the weekend, Irrinki went 5-0 to help the Belles extend their winning streak to five matches overall. Against Arkansas Tech, she won, 7-5, in doubles before winning at line five in three sets in the Belles' 4-3 win. She and partner Ayda Guler won at line two, 6-0, as the Belles swept UAFS 7-0 overall. She closed out the week with a big performance against No. 6 Cameron, as she and Guler won, 7-6 (7-5), to clinch the doubles point. She then picked up 6-1, 6-2 win at line six as ASU upset the Aggies 5-2. This spring, Irrinki is 12-3 in singles play and 13-5 in doubles play. Angelo State Announces Alpha Chi Honor Society Spring 2022 Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Alpha Chi national honor society recently inducted 20 new members for the spring 2022 semester during a ceremony in the Houston Harte University Center. Alpha Chi is one of the nation's most prestigious honor societies that is open to students majoring in all academic disciplines. To be eligible, students must rank in the top 10% of seniors at their college or university, or in the top 7.5% of juniors. Angelo State's Tarbet Wins State Department Scholarship

Price Tarbet of Big Spring, a senior history major and Russian minor at Angelo State University, has been awarded a 2022 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for Russian language studies by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Shortly after he graduates from ASU in May, Tarbet will depart June 5 for 12 weeks of intensive Russian language and cultural training at the American University of Central Asia in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan. The U.S. Department of State sponsors the CLS Program as part of a larger U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans mastering foreign languages deemed critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. The CLS Program was launched in 1972, and Tarbet is the first ASU student to earn the scholarship. See more details at angelo.edu/news.

Angelo State's Spence Named LSC Women's Field Athlete of the Week

Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, a freshman on the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet, Spence won the heptathlon with 5,371 points, beating her previous personal best by over 500 points. She took first place in the 100-meter hurdles and shot put, and she currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the heptathlon. See more details at angelosports.com and on the LSC website.

Angelo State Ram Powerlifters Medal at Nationals

Four members of Angelo State University's Ram Powerlifting Club finished in the top five in their respective contests, including one Gold Medalist and one national runner-up, at the U.S.A. Powerlifting Collegiate National Meet in Lombard, Illinois. Michael Vargas of Ozona won the Gold Medal in the 181-pound weight class of the Men's Collegiate Equipped contest to bring home a national title for ASU. Other top ASU finishers at the national meet, by category and weight class, were: Melissa Nunez of Monahans: 2nd Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 97 pounds Natalie Walker of Greenville: 3rd Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 114 pounds Britney George of Hawley: 4th Place, Women's Collegiate Equipped, 165 pounds Lifters complete three attempts each at squat, bench press and deadlift. The qualifying total is the sum of the highest weight lifted in each of the three disciplines. Vargas, the club president, posted a total sum weight of 1,697 pounds to win his Gold Medal. Angelo State's Kryukov Named LSC Men's Field Athlete of the Week

Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 3 of the outdoor season ending on April 3. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays meet March 31 - April 2, Kryukov won the heptathlon with 7,529 points. He posted first-place finishes in the long jump, discus and javelin, and he finished second in three other events. He currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the decathlon. Angelo State Honors Students Win Regional Research Awards

Autumn Cleveland of Roby and Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Michigan, seniors in the Angelo State University Honors Program, won top prizes for their research presentations at the 2022 Great Plains Honors Council (GPHC) Conference in Wichita, Kansas. Cleveland, an English major, and Preston, an English/philosophy double major, each earned a Dennis Boe Award for exceptional research and writing by an undergraduate honors student. Each was presented a plaque and a $200 cash prize, and their work will be published in The Windmill, a scholarly journal featuring undergraduate research. Only three Dennis Boe Awards are presented annually. Cleveland's oral presentation and paper detailed her research on "Monstrous Paradigms: Frankenstein's Professors and the History of Science." Angelo State's Rodriguez Named LSC Tennis Player of the Week

Dianela Rodriguez of Mexico City, Mexico, a junior on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Player of the Week for Week 9 of the season ending April 3. Rodriguez set the tone for the Belles at line one in singles play as they claimed a pair of conference wins last weekend. Against Dallas Baptist University, she defeated the Lady Patriots' Caroline Hudson 6-4, 6-2 as the Belles claimed a 7-0 win. The next day against No. 33 Midwestern State, she defeated 36th-ranked Anda Ghinga 6-2, 6-2, with the Belles winning 4-3 over the Mustangs. Angelo State's Munson Named LSC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Aaron Munson of San Antonio, a sophomore pitcher on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week for Week 9 of the season ending on April 3. This is his second LSC weekly award this season. During the Rams' 4-game series sweep of St. Edward's University in Austin, Munson threw a complete-game shutout in Game 2 to lead ASU to a narrow 2-0 victory. He surrendered only three hits over seven innings and recorded six strikeouts while holding the Hilltoppers to a .130 team batting average. Munson is now 5-1 this season with a 3.72 ERA. He is tied for second in the LSC in wins and ranks in the top five for innings pitched, strikeouts and opposing batting average. See more details at angelosports.com and on the LSC website.

Angelo State's Lerma Named LSC Softball Hitter of the Week

Ashlyn Lerma of Highland Village, a junior infielder on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for Week 8 of the season ending March 27. As the Rambelles split doubleheaders with both No. 1 UT Tyler and No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce, Lerma led the way in both ASU wins. Against the Patriots, she singled, drew two walks, stole a base and scored the winning run in a 3-2 victory. She also drove in a run in 7-2 loss in Game 2 against UTT. In ASU's victory over the Lions, Lerma went 4-for-4 at the plate, including her second inside-the-park home run of the season, and scored four runs as the Rambelles won 13-2. She also drove in ASU's only run in their subsequent 3-2 loss. She hit .500 for the week with a .600 on-base percentage. Angelo State's Scheurer Named NFCA D-II Softball Player of the Week

Paxton Scheurer of Mansfield, a junior third baseman on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Division II Louisville Slugger Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for her performance during games played March 14-20. Over six games that week, the Rambelles went 5-1 with Scheurer leading the way offensively. She batted .545 (12-for-22) with seven home runs and nine total extra-base hits. She also posted 14 RBI, nine runs scored and a ridiculous 1.591 slugging percentage. She posted three home runs in the Rambelles' 11-8 win over UT-Permian Basin on March 18, and then had a two-homer game in their 8-0 victory over Western New Mexico on March 20. Scheurer currently leads all of NCAA Division II in home runs (16), RBI (50) and slugging percentage (1.114). See more details at angelosports.com and on the NFCA website.

Angelo State's Munson Named LSC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Aaron Munson of San Antonio, a sophomore pitcher on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week for Week 7 of the season ending March 20. In the second game of a road doubleheader against Texas A&M International on March 19, Munson pitched one of the best games of his ASU career. He threw eight scoreless innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts, allowing only one hit and one walk. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the eighth inning. Angelo State Handball Club Wins National Championship

The Angelo State University Handball Club men's team brought home both a team and an individual national title from the recent 69th U.S. Handball Association National Collegiate Championships at Missouri State University. The ASU team took first place in the Men's B Division to win the national championship ahead of runner-up Texas A&M University. ASU's Jacob O'Dell of San Angelo won an individual national championship in the Men's B3 Division, defeating William Henry of Texas A&M in the final. O'Dell made it to the final by defeating his teammate, Anthone Luna of San Angelo, in a semifinal tiebreaker, 11-10. Angelo State's Armendariz Named LSC Softball Pitcher of the Week

Genesis Armendariz of Hobbs, N.M., a sophomore on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week for Week 6 of the season ending March 14. As the Belles won three of four games over the weekend, Armendariz picked up complete-game wins over Eastern New Mexico and No. 6 West Texas A&M. Over the two games, she allowed a total of only 11 hits and two earned runs, while posting 12 strikeouts. Her ERA now sits at 1.98 for the season. Angelo State Counseling Grad Students Earn State CREST Awards

Three Angelo State University graduate students who are intern school counselors in the Brownwood Independent School District earned Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) Awards for their respective schools at the Texas School Counselor Association's (TSCA) recent Professional School Counselor Conference in Round Rock. ASU graduate students Angie Bertrand, Marci Reagan and LeeAnn Stork, all from Brownwood, are members of the Brownwood ISD Counseling and Mental Health Team that earned the CREST Awards from TSCA. The CREST Awards recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs, and that have demonstrated a commitment to using the Texas Model to improve the lives and achievements of students in academic, career and personal social domains. Angelo State Track & Field Athletes Earn All-LSC Honors

Thirteen student-athletes on the Angelo State University track and field teams have earned All-Lone Star Conference accolades for their performances at the 2022 LSC Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. ASU athletes making the All-LSC first team were all event winners at the LSC Championships. For the Rambelles, Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia, (high jump, long jump) was named the Outstanding Female Field Athlete and was selected to the All-LSC first team. Joining her on the All-LSC first team are Sara Ramos of Uvalde (weight throw) and Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica (pentathlon, 60-meter hurdles). Shiean Walters of Coleman, Zykia McDaniel of Converse, and Genevie Rivera of San Antonio were named to the All-LSC second team. Abby Zamzow of Bowie and Mia Van Oudsthoorn of Roodskool, South Africa, made the All-LSC third team. For the Rams, Canon Andrews of Iraan (weight throw), Jacobee Jones (pole vault) and Emmett Seals Jr. (400 meters) of Rowlett, and Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, (heptathlon) earned All-LSC first-team honors. Angelo State Rams Earn All-LSC Basketball Honors

Three members of the Angelo State University Rams basketball team have earned All-Lone Star Conference honors for their performances during the 2021-22 regular season. Junior guard Tyrell Carroll of Omaha, Neb., was named to the All-LSC second team and the LSC All-Defensive Team. Graduate student guard Paul Williams of Southaven, Miss., was selected for the All-LSC second team. Sophomore guard Lathaniel Bastian of Nassau, Bahamas, earned All-LSC honorable mention. Carroll led the Rams in scoring, assists and steals this season, and was tops in the LSC with 2.4 steals per game. Williams was second on the team in points and first in three-point scoring. Bastian led the Rams in rebounding and blocked shots. The Rams currently sit at 20-8 as they continue play in the LSC Tournament. See more details at angelosports.com and on the LSC website.

Angelo State Track & Field Athletes Earn All-Region Honors

Ten student-athletes on the Angelo State University men's and women's track and field teams have been named to the 2022 All-South Central Region Indoor Track & Field Team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA). The top five individuals in each event earn all-region honors. For the ASU Rams, Canon Andrews of Iraan (weight throw), Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, (heptathlon), and Jacobee Jones (pole vault) and Emmett Seals Jr. (400 meters) were named to the all-region team. For the Rambelles, Zykia McDaniel of Converse (400 meters, 4x400 relay), Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia, (triple jump, long jump), Sara Ramos of Uvalde (weight throw), Genevie Rivera of San Antonio (4x400 relay), Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica, (pentathlon, 60-meter hurdles, 4x400 relay) and Shiean Walters of Coleman (400 meters, 4x400 relay) made the all-region team. Angelo State Belles Earn All-LSC Basketball Honors

Five members of the Angelo State University Belles basketball team have earned All-Lone Star Conference honors for their performances during the 2021-22 regular season. Sawyer Lloyd of Wall, a sophomore guard, was named to the All-LSC first team. Junior guard Payton Brown of Lubbock and sophomore forwards Blakely Gerber of Nazareth and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant of Amarillo were selected for the All-LSC third team. Brown was also named to the LSC All-Defensive Team. Freshman guard Madeline Stephens of Lubbock earned All-LSC honorable mention. After a bit of a slow start, the Belles finished the regular season 15-12 overall and 12-4 in the LSC. They earned the No. 4 seed for the LSC Tournament. Angelo State's Lee Named Baseball Regional Hitter of the Week

Justin Lee of Las Vegas, Nev., an outfielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the South-Central Region Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for Week 4 of the season ending Feb. 27. Over the Feb. 25-27 weekend, Lee batted .500 to lead the Rams' offense in a four-game sweep of St. Mary's University in San Antonio. The senior also collected two doubles, a home run and nine RBIs. He currently leads the Lone Star Conference with a .556 batting average. See more details at angelosports.com.

Angelo State's Lee Named LSC Baseball Hitter of the Week

Justin Lee of Las Vegas, Nev., an outfielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for Week 4 of the season ending Feb. 27. During the Rams' four-game sweep of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Lee hit .500 with two doubles, a home run and nine RBIs. The senior currently leads the LSC with a .556 batting average. Angelo State Cheer Team Wins National Title

For the fifth straight year, the Angelo State University Cheer Team has won a national title at the United Spirit Association USA Collegiate Championships in Anaheim, Calif. ASU's 32-member co-ed Cheer Team won one national championship and also recorded one runner-up performance, two national third-place finishes and a fifth-place finish in the College Game Day division, including: First Place - College Situational Sideline Contest Second Place - Mascot Contest Third Place - College Fight Song Contest Third Place - College Band Chant Contest Fifth Place - Co-Ed Show Cheer Performance Routine The ASU Cheer Team previously won 2018 and 2019 national championships in the Show Cheer division, as well as 2020 and 2021 national championships in the College Game Day division. Angelo State Athletes Win Individual LSC Track & Field Titles

Seven members of the Angelo State University Rams and Rambelles track and field teams won individual titles at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 25-26 in Lubbock. For the Rambelles, Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia (high jump & long jump); Maricia Spence of Christiana, Jamaica (pentathlon & 60-meter hurdles); and Sara Ramos of Uvalde(weight throw) took first place in their respective events. For the Rams, Canon Andrews of Iraan (weight throw), Jacobee Jones (pole vault) and Emmett Seals (400 meters) of Rowlett, and Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, (heptathlon) won titles in their respective events. Angelo State's Beck Named LSC Baseball Hitter of the Week

Austin Beck of Allen, a freshman infielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for Week 3 of the season ending Feb. 20. As the Rams won three of four home games over Oklahoma Christian University, Beck led the way offensively by picking up eight hits in 12 at-bats for a .667 batting average. He also hit his second home run of the season and collected eight RBI, five runs scored and three stolen bases. He is now batting .500 for the season, which ranks third in the LSC. Angelo State's Radic Named LSC Field Athlete of the Week

Antonija Radic of Knin, Croatia, a jumps athlete on the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for Week 6 of the indoor track and field season ending Feb. 13. Competing at the Texas Tech Shootout, Radic posted two more provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships. She leapt 19-7 (5.97 meters) in the long jump, and improved her previous provisional mark in the triple jump with an effort of 41-11 (12.78 meters). She is now ranked second in the nation in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. This also marks Radic's second LSC Field Athlete of the Week award this spring. Angelo State's Schwartz Named LSC Tennis Player of the Week

Eva Schwartz of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, France, a freshman on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Week 2 of the spring season ending Feb. 13. As the Belles went 3-1 in their road matches in Arkansas, Schwartz went 6-1 for the week in combined singles and doubles play. She was 3-0 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles matches as ASU defeated Ouachita Baptist (7-0), Henderson State (6-1) and Delta State (6-1) after falling narrowly to Mississippi College (3-4) to start the week. Angelo State's Stephens Named LSC Basketball Player of the Week

Madeline Stephens of Lubbock, a freshman forward on the Angelo State University Belles basketball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Week 13 of the season ending on Feb. 13. As the Belles swept home games against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International, Stephens owned the boards. Against the Javelinas, she grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and added three steals. Then against the Dustdevils, she again had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with a game-high five steals. For the season, Stephens is averaging 8.9 points and 8 rebounds per game. She is also one of only two LSC players to earn both offensive and defensive player of the week honors this season. See more details at angelosports.com and on the LSC website.
