Angelo State's Miller Earns LSC Soccer Preseason Honor

Kira Miller of Frisco, a junior goaltender on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Goaltender of the Year for the upcoming fall 2021 season. During the spring 2021 season, Miller saw action in five games, including four starts. She did not conced a single goal, and the Belles posted shutouts in every game she played on their way to a 10-0-0 record and the LSC Tournament title. One of Miller's shutouts was a 1-0 overtime victory over Dallas Baptist inthe LSC Championship game. For her performance on the field, Miller earned a United Soccer Coaches College Player of Distinction Award, and her academic performance earned her selection to the LSC Commissioner's Honor roll. Angelo State's Hill Nabs LSC Soccer Preseason Honor

Cassidy Hill of Forney, a sophomore defender on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the upcoming fall 2021 season. During the 2021 spring season, Hill led the Belles defense that gave up only two goals in 10 games on the way to a 10-0-0 record and the LSC Tournament title. ASU ranked fourth in NCAA Division II in goals-against average, registered eight shutouts, and did not allow any opponent to score more than one goal. Hill was named LSC Defensive Player of the Year and was selected for the All-LSC first team and the LSC All-Tournament Team. Her academic standing also put her on the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Angelo State's Gilbreath Named LSC Volleyball Preseason Offensive Player of the Year

Kailyn Gilbreath of Fort Worth, a senior on the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the upcoming fall 2021 season. An outside hitter, Gilbreath is coming off the spring 2021 season when she recorded 269.5 points, including 232 kills and a .262 attack percentage. She was named the Spring 2021 LSC Offensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Belles to the AVCA National Championship Tournament title. This is second straight season she has been named the LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The Belles have also been picked to repeat as conference champions in the LSC Preseason Poll. Angelo State's Poole Earns Rodeo Houston Scholarship

Cameron Poole of Kerrville, a junior animal science major at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $4,000 2021 Rodeo Achievement Scholarship from Rodeo Houston. The Achievement Scholarships are awarded to current Rodeo scholars who are working toward an undergraduate degree, have completed four semesters and at least 60 hours of coursework, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher at a Texas college or university. Each student will receive an additional $4,000 scholarship for each eligible semester. Poole is a regular on the ASU Dean's List, ASU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. Angelo State Track & Field Athletes Earn National Academic Honors

Sixteen members of the Angelo State University track and field teams have been named 2021 All-Academic Athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Seven Rams and nine Rambelles earned the All-Academic Athlete designation. To be eligible, a student-athlete must hold at least a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) and achieve a provisional or automatic national qualifying mark during either the indoor or outdoor season. The Rambelles were also named a 2021 All-Academic Team for maintaining a cumulative team GPA higher than 3.0 throughout the season. Angelo State's Munson Named Summer Team's Pitcher of the Week

Aaron Munson of San Antonio, a pitcher on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named Pitcher of the Week for his summer leage team, the Kansas Cannons of the Kansas Collegiate League. In four appearances so far this summer, including two starts, Munson is 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA. In 19 innings, he has given up just five earned runs while notching 28 strikeouts to only five walks. In his freshman season for the Rams this spring, Munson made 16 appearances, mainly in relief. He went 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA and one save. In 32.1 innings, he gave up just 12 earned runs with 35 strikeouts and only 11 walks. More details on the Cannons are available at kansascannons.com. Angelo State Tennis Players Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

Five members of the Angelo State University Belles tennis team have been named 2020-21 NCAA Division II Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Belles were also named a 2020-21 ITA All-Academic Team. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have at least a 3.5 GPA and be eligible for competition. Belles Scholar-Athletes are Zoe Gubbels of Velserbroek, Netherlands; Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden; Dianela Rodriguez of Mexico City, Mexico; Anna Schneemann of San Angelo; and Alexandra Vishnevskaya of Moscow, Russia. The Belles won their second straight Lone Star Conference Championship this spring and advanced to the NCAA D-II South Central Regional, reaching the Sweet 16. Angelo States Van Oudtshoorn Named Academic All-District

Mia van Oudtshoorn, a senior thrower on the Angelo State University Rambelles track and field team, has been named to the Academic All-District first team for District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. A native of Roodskool, Kroonstad, South Africa, van Oudtshoorn is majoring in chemistry at Angelo State and holds a 3.97 grade point average. She was also named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team following both the 2020-21 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. More details are available on the CoSIDA website.

Angelo State's Baker Picked by St. Louis Cardinals in MLB Draft

Trent Baker of Georgetown, a pitcher for the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball Draft on July 12. A 6-3, 240-pound right-hander, Baker is ASU's all-time winningest pitcher. This season, he went 13-1 with a 2.11 ERA to help lead the Rams to Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II South Central Regional championships and a trip to the D-II College World Series. He also set the ASU and LSC records for career strikeouts and was named LSC Pitcher of the Year, South Central Region Pitcher of the Year and a first-team All-American. Baker graduated from ASU in May with his Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in management information systems. See the official draft announcement on the MLB website. Angelo State's Brezgiel Named Academic All-American

Marissa Brezgiel of Frisco, a defender on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named to the NCAA Division II Academic All-America Soccer Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A biology major, Brezgiel graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelor of Science degree in May. On the field, she played in all 10 games for the Rambelles this season, notching two assists and helping lead the defense that gave up only two goals all season. ASU went 10-0-0 this spring and won the Lone Star Conference Championship. Brezgiel was also named to the Academic All-LSC and CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. Angelo State's Villagrand Named to Panama National Women's Soccer Team

Gabby Villagrand of Spring, a senior forward on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been called up to the Panama Women's National Team for the upcoming Triangular Tournament, with Panama's first game set for July 4 against Nicaragua. This is Villagrand's second call up to the national team. She appeared in three matches in 2020, including one against the U.S. Women's National Team. This spring, Villagrand scored a team-high six goals to help lead the Rambelles to a perfect 10-0-0 season and the Lone Star Conference Championship. She was named the LSC Forward of the Year and earned Scholar All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches organization. See more details at angelosports.com.

Angelo State Baseball Players Named Summer Team's Players of the Week

Catcher Richard "Tripp" Clark of Waco and pitcher Connor Hart of Plano, both players on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, have been named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week for their summer leage team, the Kansas Cannons of the Kansas Collegiate League. In 10 games so far this summer, Clark is batting .353 with four home runs and 10 RBI. On the mound, Hart has made two appearances for the Cannons, giving up just two earned runs in seven innings with 12 strikeouts and a 2.57 ERA. Angelo State Student-Athletes Make the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll

More than 160 Angelo State University student-athletes and student-athletic trainers have been recognized for their academic achievements during the 2021 spring semester with places on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Commissioner's Honor Roll is announced at the conclusion of each fall and spring semester. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.30 GPA for the current semester and be on the roster. ASU is second in the LSC for number of students making the spring honor roll, as well as for the number of students posting a perfect 4.0 GPA (63). Angelo State's King Earns Congressional Internship

Bailey King of San Angelo, a political science and communication double-major at Angelo State University, has been selected for the ASU Political Science and Philosophy Department's 2021 Government and Public Service Internship Program in Washington, D.C. King will spend the upcoming fall semester working as an intern for a member of the U.S. Congress, and will be placed in either a congressional or senate office based primarily on her interests in issues. She will live at the Texas Tech House with other interns from Texas Tech University and will receive an $8,000 stipend to help defray the costs of living in Washington, D.C. Angelo State's Gilbreath Named Volleyball Academic All-District

Kailyn Gilbreath of Fort Worth, a member of the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team, has been named to the NCAA Division II Academic All-District Women's Volleyball Team for District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. A senior kinesiology major, Gilbreath is carrying a 3.75 GPA. She also helped lead the Belles to a 17-2 record as they won the Lone Star Conference Tournament and the AVCA Division II National Tournament. She was named LSC Player of the Year and made the All-LSC Team, LSC All-Academic Team and AVCA All-Tournament Team. More award details are available on the CoSIDA website.

Angelo State's Brezgiel & Williams Named LSC Scholar-Athletes

Marissa Brezgiel of Frisco and Jordan Williams of Round Rock have been named Angelo State University's Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2020-21 academic year. Brezgiel is a senior biology major and a defender on the ASU Rambelles soccer team. Williams is a redshirt-sophomore majoring in management and the third baseman for the ASU Rams baseball team. Both also helped lead their respective teams to LSC Championships this year. The LSC annually presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. Recipients represent the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership on display at each LSC campus. More details are available on the LSC website.

Angelo State Soccer Players Named D-II College Players of Distinction

Three players on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team have each earned a 2020-21 College Player Award of Distinction from the United Soccer Coaches (USC) organization. Midfielder Maddi Kyle of Wichita Falls, forward Avery McNeme of Lubbock, and goaltender Kira Miller of Frisco were recognized with the new awards that were introduced this spring by USC to recognize significant players and their contributions to their programs. Kyle, McNeme and Miller helped lead the Rambelles to an undefeated 10-0-0 season and the Lone Star Conference Championship this spring. See more details on the USC website.

Angelo State's Holt Named Student Regent for Texas Tech University System

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Keaghan Holt of Seguin as the student regent for the Texas Tech University System (TTU System) Board of Regents for the 2021-22 academic year. Holt is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in health science professions at Angelo State University. She becomes the 16th student to serve on the TTU System Board of Regents and the fourth from ASU. She will serve a one-year term, effective as of June 1, and her first Board of Regents meeting will take place Aug. 5-6 in Lubbock. See the full story at angelo.edu/news.

Angelo State Announces Spring 2021 Dean's List

Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, has announced the students achieving the Dean's List designation for the 2021 spring semester. To be eligible for the ASU Dean's List, full-time undergraduate students must maintain a 3.25 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Angelo State Baseball Players Named ABCA/Rawlings All-America

Three players from the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have earned All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for the 2021 season. Pitcher Trent Baker of Georgetown and outfielder Josh Elvir of Kemah were named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II All-America first team. First baseman Aaron Walters of Center Point was named to the All-America second team. All three have also earned 2021 All-America accolades from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The Rams won the Lone Star Conference and South Central Regional championships this season. Pitchers Trent Baker and Ben Elder, outfielder Josh Elvir and first baseman Aaron Walters were named to the ABCA Rawlings NCAA Division II All-South Central Region first team. Outfielder Jackson Hardy and third baseman Jordan Williams were named to the all-region second team. The Rams won the Lone Star Conference and South Central Regional championships this season. Angelo State's Brezgiel Named to Academic All-District Soccer Team

Marissa Brezgiel of Frisco, a defender on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named to the 2020-21 NCAA Division II Academic All-District Team for District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. A senior biology major, Brezgiel is carrying a 3.99 grade point average. She also helped lead the Rambelles defense that allowed only two goals as ASU went 10-0-0 for the season and won the Lone Star Conference Championship. Angelo State Track & Field Athletes Named All-Americans

Seventeen student-athletes on the Angelo State University track and field teams have earned NCAA Division II All-America honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their performances at the recent NCAA D-II Outdoor National Championships. Thirteen Rams and four Rambelles have been named All-Americans by USTFCCCA. The Rams finished third at the national meet while the Rambelles finished 18th. Angelo State University Announces Spring 2021 Graduates

Angelo State University conferred 888 undergraduate and graduate degrees on 884 graduates during the 2021 spring commencement exercises on May 15, 2021, at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena in San Angelo, Texas. A full list of the graduates is available on the ASU website at angelo.edu.

Angelo State Baseball Players Named NCBWA All-Americans

Three players from the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have earned 2021 All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Pitcher Trent Baker of Georgetown and first baseman Aaron Walters of Center Point were named to the All-America first team. Outfielder Josh Elvir of Kemah was named to the All-America third team See the NCBWA news release. The Rams won the Lone Star Conference Tournament on May 22 and continue play today against Colorado Mesa in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional on in San Angelo. The Rams beat arch-rival West Texas A&M in the first game of the regional tournament, 10-2, yesterday.

Angelo State Baseball Players Named D2CCA All-Region

Four players from the Angelo State University Rams baseball team have earned 2021 All-South Central Region honors from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). Pitcher Trent Baker of Georgetown was named the South Central Region Pitcher of the Year. He is joined on the all-region first team by outfielder Josh Elvir of Kemah. First baseman Aaron Walters of Center Point and third baseman Jordan Williams of Round Rock were named to the all-region second team. The Rams won the Lone Star Conference Tournament on May 22 and begin play in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional on May 27 in San Angelo.

Angelo State's Barnhill Earns Softball All-America Honors

Courtney Barnhill of Lubbock, an outfielder on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named to the 2021 NCAA Division II All-America third team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). A senior nursing major, Barnhill started all 47 games for the Rambelles this season. She batted .346 while leading the team in hits (54), doubles (17), total bases (91), runs scored (49) and stolen bases (24), and was second on the team in RBI (41). She was also named to the All-Lone Star Conference first team, won the LSC Golden Glove Award in center field, and earned All-South Central Region recognition from NFCA and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). The Rambelles went 33-14 this season and advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament.

Angelo State's Garza Earns Statewide Social Work Internship Award

Adolph "AJ" Garza of San Angelo, who graduated from Angelo State University on May 14 with his Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree, has earned the 2020-21 World Changer Award from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) for his performance as an intern with the local office of Child Protective Services (CPS). The World Changer Award is given to only one DFPS intern in the state of Texas each year. It recognizes the outstanding service of an intern who has volunteered for DFPS within the last year and who has demonstrated professionalism, taken initiative and works well as a team player. Garza completed his CPS internship during the 2020-21 academic year as part of his B.S.W. degree plan. He will enter ASU's Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree program this fall.
