Angelo State's Hessock Named Girl Scout of the Year

Olivia Hessock of Abilene, a freshman management major at Angelo State University, has been named the 2020-21 Girl Scout of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6873 in Abilene. Hessock's latest ongoing service project could last for quite a while. Assisted by her church, Zion Lutheran, and other helpers, she taught children at All God's Children after-school day care to construct tied fleece blankets for children in Child Protective Services. Angelo State's Rodriguez Named LSC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Dianela Rodriguez of Mexico City, Mexico, a sophomore on the Angelo State University Belles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Week 9 of the spring tennis season. Over the weekend of April 9-11, Rodriguez went 2-0 in singles to help lead the Belles to wins over Dallas Baptist University and 17th-ranked Midwestern State. Angelo State's Preston Wins National Alpha Chi Scholarship

Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Mich., a junior at Angelo State University, has earned an Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship of $2,000 in the Alpha Chi Honor Society 2021 National Scholarship Competition. A philosophy major, Preston's scholarly work submitted for the competition is titled "Aristotelianism in Wordsworth's Preface to 'Lyrical Ballads.'" Her scholarship award was announced during the virtual Alpha Chi National Convention. Also a member of the ASU Belles volleyball team, Preston recently earned All-Lone Star Conference honors after helping lead the Belles to a second straight LSC championship.

Angelo State Cheer Team Wins Multiple Trophies at Nationals

The Angelo State University Cheer Team brought home a host of trophies, including one national title, from the College Classic National Invitational cheer competition held April 10-11 in Orlando, Fla. ASU's 25-member co-ed Cheer Team entered two Show Cheer routines and competed in Stunt Group and Mascot contests. Overcoming a last-minute injury, ASU posted the following results: First Place - Partner Stunt Second Place - Partner Stunt Second Place - Mascot Third Place - Co-Ed Show Cheer Fourth Place - Co-Ed Show Cheer Earlier this spring, the ASU Cheer Team also won multiple national titles at the United Spirit Association USA Collegiate Championships for the fourth straight year. Angelo State's Garcia Named NFCA Softball National Player of the Week

Keilei Garcia of Hemet, Calif., a freshman catcher on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for her performances during Week 9 of the spring softball season. Garcia's offensive onslaught helped the Rambelles sweep weekend series over Midwestern State and Texas Woman's University April 9-11. Over the four games, she batted .700 (7-10) with four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored. She was also named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week. Angelo State's McNeme Named LSC Soccer Tournament MVP

Avery McNeme of Lubbock, a senior midfielder/forward on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named Most Valuable Player of the 2021 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. McNeme scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the championship game on April 13 as the No. 12 Rambelles defeated No. 1 Dallas Baptist, 1-0, to claim the LSC Tournament title at DBU's home field. Angelo State's Hampton Makes LSC Soccer All-Tournament Team

Kylie Hampton of Frisco, a junior defender on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named to the 2021 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team. Hampton helped lead the ASU defense that did not give up a goal during the championship tournament, including a 1-0 overtime victory in the title game on April 13, as the No. 12 Rambelles defeated No. 1 Dallas Baptist to claim the LSC Tournament title at DBU's home field. Valerie Solis of Arlington, a sophomore midfielder on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named to the 2021 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team. Solis helped lead the No. 12 Rambelles to the LSC Championship as they held their opponents scoreless and won multiple overtime games during the tournament. Angelo State's Garcia Named LSC Softball Hitter of the Week

Keilei Garcia of Hemet, Calif., a catcher on the Angelo State University Rambelles softball team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for her performances during Week 9 of the spring softball season. As the Rambelles swept four games against Midwestern State and Texas Woman's University, Garcia posted a .700 batting average (7-10) with four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored. Her hits included a walk-off, two-run single that ended the final game against TWU. Through the Belles' 31 games this season, Garcia is batting .371 with six home runs and 29 RBI. Angelo State Announces Phi Kappa Phi Certificate of Merit Recipients

Angelo State University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society has awarded 28 pre-membership Certificates of Merit to freshmen in the top 2.5% of their class and sophomores in the top 5% of their class in recognition of their academic success and as encouragement to join PKP when they are eligible as juniors. PKP is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society encompassing all academic disciplines. Invitations to join PKP are extended to juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and to seniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. Angelo State Announces Spring 2021 Phi Kappa Phi Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society recently inducted its spring 2021 class of 41 students during a special virtual initiation ceremony on Facebook. PKP is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society encompassing all academic disciplines. Invitations to join PKP are extended to juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and to seniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. Angelo State's Stormes Earns Fulbright Research Internship

Zoey Stormes of Keller, a junior in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been selected for a 2021 Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Research Internship. Fewer than 100 of the fully-funded summer internships are awarded each year. Selectees will spend 10-12 weeks this summer working with research teams from across the U.S. and Canada on projects supervised by Canadian university faculty members. Stormes, a biology major, will participate in a project titled "Examining the Role of Technology to Support Aging in Place in Rural and Northern Communities" led by Prof. Shannon Freeman of the University of Northern British Columbia-Prince George. Angelo State's Lewis Earns Fulbright Research Internship

Jazlynn Lewis of Bandera, a sophomore in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been selected for a 2021 Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Research Internship. Fewer than 100 of the fully-funded summer internships are awarded each year. Selectees will spend 10-12 weeks this summer working with research teams from across the U.S. and Canada on projects supervised by Canadian university faculty members. Lewis, an animal science major, will participate in a project titled "Understanding the role of blood flow alterations in the development of equine laminitis" led by Prof. Julia Montgomery of the University of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon. Angelo State's Delgadillo Named LSC Tennis Player of the Week

Maria Delgadillo of Mexico City, Mexico, a senior on the Angelo State University Rambelles tennis team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Week 8 of the spring tennis season. Delgadillo went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as the Rambelles defeated St. Mary's University and Texas A&M-Kingsville over the April 2-4 weekend. She has now won four straight singles matches and holds a 9-3 doubles record as the No. 12 Rambelles remain undefeated in LSC play this spring. See the story on the LSC website.

Angelo State's Holland Wins Top National STEM Scholarship

Katie Holland of Aledo, a second-year biology student in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been awarded a 2021 Goldwater Scholarship, which is considered the nation's most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Holland is one of just 410 college students from across the U.S., and one of only 22 in Texas, to earn a 2021 Goldwater Scholarship. More than 1,250 students were nominated for the scholarship this year, representing 438 colleges and universities. The scholarship provides each recipient up to $7,500 a year to cover the cost of tuition, mandatory fees, books, and room and board for up to four semesters or until graduation. Angelo State's Siroki Named LSC Co-Field Athlete of the Week

Trpimir Siroki of Zagrab, Croatia, a junior on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his performance during Week 4 of the outdoor track and field season. At ASU's annual David Noble Relays, Siroki took first place and hit an automatic qualifying mark in the decathlon with a score of 7,515 points. He currently leads the LSC and NCAA Division II in the decathlon. He also hit two provisional qualifying marks in the long jump (24-9, 7.56 meters) and the 110-meter hurdles (14.50). Angelo State Volleyball Players Earn All-Conference Honors

Seven members of the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team have earned Lone Star Conference postseason awards for their performances during the 2021 spring season that saw the Belles win their second straight LSC Championship. Five Belles earned LSC All-Conference honors, including Kailyn Gilbreath of Fort Worth being named LSC Player of the Year. Also earning All-Conference honors are Sophia Berg of Georgetown, Lindsey Ledyard of Cedar Park, Chloe Patton of Gillette, and Grace White of Helotes. ASU's Elsa Lamphere of Aurora, Colo., was named to the All-Freshman Team. Additionally - Berg, Gilbreath, Patton and Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Mich., earned LSC All-Academic Awards. Angelo State Athletic Training Students Earn LSC Academic Awards

Four of Angelo State University's student athletic trainers have received Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Student Academic Awards for the 2020-21 academic year. Each academic year, the LSC recognizes student athletic trainers who assist with the operation of the athletics department while also exceling in the classroom. To be eligible, they must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average with at least 24 credit hours at the nominating institution. The qualifications mirror those required of student-athletes to gain LSC All-Academic recognition. ASU honorees include Baylee Allen of Hurst, Mackenzie Holt and Blaine Todd of San Angelo, and Hayden Stewart of Cedar Park. See the story on the LSC website.

Angelo State's Elvir Named Baseball Regional Hitter of the Week

Josh Elvir of Kemah, an All-American outfielder on the Angelo State University Rams baseball team, has been named the NCAA Division II South Central Region Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the week ending April 4. During the 11th-ranked Rams' three-game sweep of St. Edward's University, Elvir hit .636 with three home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored. Through ASU's 23 games, Elvir currently leads the Lone Star Conference in hits (39), batting average (.448), slugging percentage (.862), on-base percentage (.561) and runs scored (41). Elvir was also named the LSC Hitter of the Week.

Baleigh Allen of Katy, a senior middle blocker on the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team, has been named to the Lone Star Conference's 2021 Athletic Performance All-Conference Team. The team recognizes student-athletes who excel in work ethic, dedication to process, attendance, communication, leadership and growth. This year, it includes 24 student-athletes representing five men's sports and five women's sports. Angelo State's Miller Named LSC Soccer Goalie of the Week

Kira Miller of Frisco, a junior on the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for Week 6 of the spring soccer season. In the Belles' final regular-season game, Miller made six saves to record a shutout as ASU beat Texas A&M-International, 5-0. She has not allowed a goal this season. Angelo State's Deysel Named LSC Field Athlete of the Week

Deoux Deysel of Dwaalboom, South Africa, a thrower on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named the Lone Star Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his performances during the week ending March 28. Competing in the javelin at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Deysel hit a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark with a throw of 242-2 (78.82 meters). In a field made up almost exclusively of Division I competitors, Deysel finished fifth overall. He currently leads the LSC and Division II in the javelin. See the story on the LSC website.

Angelo State's Gilbreath Named National Volleyball Player of the Week

Kailyn Gilbreath of Fort Worth, a junior right side on the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II Women's Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for her performances during the week ending April 1. At the LSC Tournament, Gilbreath posted 14 kills, 14 assists and 11 digs in the Belles' win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, and then posted a match-high 23 kills and 10 digs in their victory over UT-Tyler in the championship game. She was also named the All-Tournament Team MVP after leading the Belles to their second straight LSC title. See the story on the AVCA website.

Angelo State's Nunley Named to All-LSC Athletic Performance Team

Andre Nunley of Euless, a redshirt-freshman guard on the Angelo State University Rams basketball team, has been named to the Lone Star Conference's 2021 Athletic Performance All-Conference Team. The team recognizes student-athletes who excel in work ethic, dedication to process, attendance, communication, leadership and growth. This year, it includes 24 student-athletes representing five men's sports and five women's sports. Nunley played in 16 of the Rams' 18 games this season, averaging 5.5 points and 2.1 assists per game to help lead the Rams to their eighth straight trip to the LSC Tournament. Angelo State Rams Clay Target Team Claims National Title

Angelo State University's Rams Clay Target Team won a national championship in Sporting Clays and finished as overall national runner-up at the recent Association of College Unions International (ACUI) 2021 Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio. Competing in Division 2 against 11 other teams, the Rams Clay Target Team took first place in the Sporting Clays Team competition to be named the 2021 Sporting Clays Division 2 national champion. In the High Over All standings, ASU scored 1,388 total points in the various team competitions to finish second behind only the team from Martin Methodist College (Tennessee) that scored 1,397 points. Angelo State Announces Spring 2021 Alpha Chi Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Alpha Chi national honor society recently inducted 24 new members for the spring 2021 semester during a virtual ceremony. Alpha Chi is one of the nation's most prestigious honor societies and is open to students majoring in any academic discipline. To be eligible, students must rank in the top 10 percent of seniors at their college or university, or in the top 7.5 percent of juniors. See the complete list of inductees at angelo.edu.

Angelo State ROTC Cadet Wins National Scholarship for Russian Studies

Kevin Rudaski of Waldorf, Md., a cadet in Angelo State University's Air Force ROTC Detachment 847, has been awarded a Project Global Officer (Project GO) Scholarship that will fund Russian language studies through Indiana University this summer. Project GO is an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office that provides scholarships to ROTC students for critical language studies. Rudaski's scholarship will pay for his tuition, fees, books and other expenses to participate in a virtual Russian language and culture program from June 1 to July 30 in Indiana University's Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies.
