Angelo State Announces 2019 Order of the Sword & Shield Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Order of the Sword and Shield national honor society inducted 26 new members during a recent ceremony in ASU's Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Security Studies. The Order of the Sword and Shield is the only academic and professional honor society dedicated exclusively to homeland security, intelligence, emergency management and all protective security disciplines. Angelo State Announces Class of 2019 Top Graduates

Evelyn Burch of Clinton, Md., has been selected to receive Angelo State University's 2019 Presidential Award as the top graduate in her class, while five other ASU graduating seniors have been selected for 2018-19 Distinguished Student Awards from their respective academic colleges. Burch will be recognized at ASU's May 11 commencement ceremonies, along with the five Distinguished Student Award honorees. The Distinguished Student Award recipients are: Brianna Gabaldon, Archer College of Health and Human Services; Talon Shoemake, College of Arts and Humanities; Claire Benschoter, College of Education; Angela Chen, College of Science and Engineering; and Lacey Maurice, Norris-Vincent College of Business. Angelo State's Burch Wins National Research Paper Award

Evelyn Burch, a senior at Angelo State University, has received the 2017-18 Robert A. Kilmarx Award for the Best Military, Intelligence or National Security Strategic Analysis Paper from the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) in Washington, D.C. A political science major from Clinton, Md., Burch won the Kilmarx Award for her paper titled "Projecting Power: China and the United States' Struggle for Dominance in the Era of Xi and Trump." The award also includes a $1,000 prize and publication of her paper in the CSPC online anthology, "The Fellows Review," this summer. Read the full story on the ASU website.

Angelo State Bass Anglers Qualify for FLW National Tournament

Two teams representing Angelo State University's Bass Anglers Club have qualified to compete at the 2020 Yeti FLW College Fishing National Championship next summer at a location to be announced. The two ASU teams made it into the national tournament field by placing in the top 10 at the Yeti FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Tournament on Lake Texoma just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex earlier this month. Hammer thrower Decio Andrade of Camacha, Portugal, was named Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week. ASU's 4x100-meter relay team, Kaitlyn Mathews of Big Spring, Hannah Porter of Austin, Sarah Porter of Austin and Tare Ward of San Antonio, were collectively named Women's Track Athlete of the Week. Decio Andrade of Camacha, Portugal, a freshman hammer thrower on the Angelo State University Rams track and field team, has been named NCAA Division II Men's National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
